Engineering as Applied Social & Physical Sciences

IDEJIORA-KALU, Ndubuisi. (2024). Engineering as Applied Social & Physical Sciences (Comparative Case Studies in Transdisciplinary Systems Science & Engineering). Prefaced by Professor Dr. Vladimir Mokiy, Self-published, 2024.

This new work by Ndubuisi Idejiora-Kalu discusses the close link between engineering and social sciences. The book argues that engineering is as much an applied social science as it is a physical science. It demonstrates that these two fields operate within the same problem-solving sphere, seeking to understand and propose solutions to the complex issues affecting our societies.

Drawing on the theory of holism, the author highlights the systemic nature of our world, where everything is interconnected. He explains that engineering, by focusing solely on physical sciences, has failed to address modern challenges such as climate change, poverty, terrorism, and other complex problems often deemed “wicked problems.” These issues, by their nature, require a transdisciplinary approach that integrates social sciences.

The book also presents comparative case studies illustrating how systems engineering science can respond to complexities in various fields such as international relations, political science, macroeconomics, management, and theoretical physics. Captivating themes such as the “master-slave psychology syndrome” and innovative methods for unifying order and disorder are also discussed.

This publication aims to enrich the ongoing co-project of CIRET entitled Forming a Systemic Transdisciplinary Worldview in the Higher Education System (2023 – 2026), which anticipates the writing of a manual on “Transdisciplinarity of Systems,” intended to train transdisciplinary generalists from 2026 onwards.
